Golden Milk

Ever heard of Golden Milk? Sounds weird right? I feel like I’m seeing it more and more these days and thought I would break it down for you. Golden milk is essentially turmeric steeped in the milk of your choice turning it into this beautiful golden color.

But why does this matter to me? And what the heck is turmeric really anyways? Ok so turmeric is an old Indian spice that comes from a flowering plant in the Ginger family. Turmeric has an active compound in it called Curcumin which is a powerful medicinal compound. Curcumin is an anti-inflammatory, an anti-oxidant, and can lower your risk of diseases like heart disease.

Powerful stuff huh? Interesting side note: Curcumin or Tumeric on its own will not be effectively absorbed into your bloodstream. You have to make sure you take Piperine when you consume Turmeric so your body can absorb all the goodness of the Turmeric. Don’t stress though: just toss some black pepper into your golden milk and problem solved (Piperine is a component of black pepper) OR take a Turmeric supplement, making sure that the supplement contains Piperine.

Another little hint is to throw in some ghee or coconut oil into your golden milk because Curcumin is a fat soluble, so it’s best to be taken with a healthy fat.

Seem like a lot? Good thing I already did the work and perfected the recipe for you!

My go to Golden Milk recipe is below! Enjoy!

Golden Milk

Prep time: 2 minutes

Cook time: 8 minutes

Serves: 1

1 cup milk of your choice (I like almond milk)

2 tblsp Turmeric

2 tblsp raw local honey

1 tblsp ghee or coconut oil

1 tsp black pepper

1 tsp cinnamon

Heat up your milk in a medium saucepan on medium heat until it comes to a simmer. Add in your other ingredients and let it simmer for 6 to 8 minutes, strain out the solids, pour into your favorite mug and enjoy!
